Assignment Four

Due June 15th, 11:59 PM HOL-time

Here you will find a range of options for completing your assignment. Pick whichever you like but remember that we will only be grading the first 60 points worth of work you complete - you can do more options for fun if you like but you won't be able to earn additional points for them.

Send all work in one email to holherbologyhomework@gmail.com with the subject line "Herbology-Lesson 4-Hol Name". For example, if I was submitting, my subject line would read: Herbology-Lesson 4-Sky Alton. Please remember to also put your Hol Name and House at the top of the email!

No attachments will be opened - this includes Google Drive links and similar. If you submit an image as part of your assignment, please upload it to an image hosting website and send the link.

2. What colour are the flowers of belladonna and aconite?

3. Why do people cultivate snargaluffs?

4. What is the effect of a mandrake's cry?

7. How can you recognise venomous tentacula seeds?

8. Why is aconite also known as wolfsbane?

9. What side effects is belladonna known to cause?

10. How do you know when a mandrake plant has reached maturity?

True or False (10 points, 2 points each)

If the statement is false, correct it by telling me what's true.

1. . Devils snare likes a hot, dry climate.

2. The bite of a venomous tentacula isn't particularly dangerous.

3. Aconite is also known as deadly nightshade.

4. Venomous tentaculas eat doxies and chizpurfles.

5. Mandrakes like to hold loud parties.

Research (10 points)

Do some research into a non-magical plant that is considered particularly dangerous. Is it poisonous, carnivorous or does it have an aggressive defence mechanism? Tell me about it in your own words. (minimum 100 words)

Opinion (10 points)

Do you think it's responsible for wizards to use dangerous plants like snargaluffs, devils snare and venomous tentaculas as a security measure? Why or why not? (Minimum 100 words)

Greenhouse Tales (20 points)

Tell me about your experiences amongst the dangerous plants. Were you nervous? Did you get bitten or seized from behind at any point? Are there any you'd like a closer look at in spite of the risks? Include anything you like. (minimum 200 words)

Field Guide (20 points)

Sometimes people can come across these dangerous plants in the wild or where they least expect them to be. Draw up a handy field guide in the form of a graphic (with illustrations and key facts) that might help someone to recognise at least three of them.

Trial and Error (10 points)

Wizards have spent years trying to find ways to cope with these dangerous plants. We didn't just instinctively know to fight devils snare with fire, to tie a snargaluff in knots or throw a doxy or two at a tentacula. List 5 failed methods that previous herbologists have used to try to fend off a dangerous plant. Include at least 2 lines of explanation for each and be as silly or as serious as you like.
